1 FOREIGNERS Can permanent residents vote in the elections? No, only South African citizens with a green bar-coded ID book can register to vote in elections.
2 VOTING Can I vote on behalf of someone who is unable to get to their voting station? No the Electoral Act requires that you need to register and vote in person at the voting station in the voting district in which you are a resident.
3 VOTING Can I vote with my temporary registration certificate (TRC)? If not, what will I do? No, you can only vote with your South Africa, green bar-coded ID or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC). You need to apply for a green bar-coded ID or a valid TIC from the Department of Home Affairs.
4 VOTING Do I need my sticker to vote? If your name does not appear on the Voters' Roll and you have registered, the registration sticker is proof of your for registration. You can check your registration details before election day.
5 VOTING How will I vote if my new ID book has not yet arrived? You can apply for a Temporary Identity Certificate at the Department of Home Affairs. This certificate must be valid on election day. You will be able to vote only if you have registered to vote and your name is on the voters' roll.
6 VOTING How will the IEC ensure security and non-intimidation at the polling station? The SAPS and SANDF are at voting stations to ensure your safety???
7 SPECIAL VOTING I am bedridden and cannot go to the voting station. How will I vote? Contact the local Municipal Electoral Office to get an Application for a Special Vote Form (VEC 1 FORM), complete it and have someone deliver it back to that Office. The presiding officer will verify if you are registered and confirm that you can't go to the voting station on election day to cast your vote. If your application is successful the IEC will send two officials to your home before election day as per the election timetable to cast your votes. There are cut-off dates for such applications - the local Municipal Electoral Office can tell you more.
8 SPECIAL VOTING What happens to people in hospital on election day Contact the local Municipal Electoral Office to get an Application a Special Vote Form (VEC 1 FORM), complete it and have someone deliver it back to that Office. 9 SPECIAL VOTING I am in the SANDF/ SAPS - where will I vote? You can apply for a special vote if you are on elections duty and you are registered to vote. There will be special days to cast your vote as per the election timetable. Refer to the section on Special Votes on the Website for more information.
10 SPECIAL VOTING I registered but will be overseas on election day. Can I vote? You can apply for a special vote. You can vote only if your absence from the South Africa falls into the following categories:

1) Absence from the South Africa on government service or living in the household of such a person;

2) Temporary absence from South Africa if on a holiday, a business trip, attendance at a tertiary institution or educational visit and partaking in an international sports event. Refer to the section on Special Votes on the Website for more information.
11 VOTING I am blind - who will help me at the voting station? You can take somebody who is 18 years or older who is not a party agent with you to the voting station to help you to cast your vote. You can also request the assistance of the presiding officer at the voting station.
12 VOTING I am turning 18 [e.g. 2 days) AFTER election day. Can a special arrangement be made for me to vote? You must have turned 18 on election day for you to be able to vote. The Electoral Act states you must be 18 years old on the day of the election.
13 VOTING I have lost my sticker. What happens now? The registration sticker is your proof of having applied for registration. You can only vote if your name appears on the Voters' Roll. Check your registration details by calling 0800 11 8000 toll-free from a landline or SMS your ID number to 32810 (R1 per SMS).
14 VOTING I have registered but have lost my ID with the sticker in it. Can I still vote? Yes, provided you apply for, and receive a Temporary Identity Certificate that will be valid on election day. This can be done through the Department of Home Affairs. Check your registration details to confirm if your name appears on the voters' roll by calling 0800 11 8000 toll-free from a landline or SMS your ID number to 38210 (R1 per SMS). You can also re-register as you have to be on the voters roll to vote.
15 VOTING I have registered but I don't want to vote - will anything happen to me if I don't vote? No - voting is not compulsory in SA. However voting is an important civic duty for all South Africans.
16 VOTING I registered at a temporary registration station - where will I vote? Voting stations may change from time to time, depending on availability of each voting venue. You can check on the Website of the IEC or call 0800 11 8000 toll-free from a landline to confirm your correct voting station in the voting district where you live.
17 VOTING I registered but am now in prison, will I be allowed to vote? Yes, for the upcoming National and Provincial Elections in 2009 you will be able to vote as long as you have your valid, green, bar-coded ID and you are registered to vote. Check? your registration details to confirm if your name appears on the voters' roll by calling 0800 11 8000 toll-free from a landline.
18 VOTING I will be out of town on election day. How and where will I vote? For the National and Provincial 2009 Elections, you will be able to vote at any of the approximately 20 000 voting stations across South Africa. Ensure that you have proof of registration (bar-coded sticker). Verify your registration details to confirm if your name appears on the voters' roll by calling 0800 11 8000 toll free from a landline or SMS your ID number to 32810 (R1 per SMS). At the voting station on election day, you will be asked to complete a section 24A form. If you are outside your province where you have registered you will only be able to vote in the national election and not the provincial election.
19 VOTING Is election day going to be a public holiday? The IEC does not decide this. The President with the Minister of Home Affairs will decide if the election day will be a public holiday
20 VOTING Where will I vote? At the voting station in the voting district where you are registered to vote. Voting stations can change due to unavailability. Verify your registration details to confirm if your name appears on the voters' roll and to check whether your voting station has changed by calling 0800 11 8000 toll-free from a landline.
21 VOTING Which political party should I vote for? That is your choice. Your vote is confidential.
22 VOTING Will there be postal votes or Internet voting? There is no postal or Internet voting.
