The Electoral Court has approved the request of the Electoral Commission to postpone the by-elections in Metsimaholo to 29 November 2017.
The scheduled date for the by-elections is 29 November 2017 pending proclamation by the Member of Executive Council (MEC). By-elections in Metsimaholo Municipality (FS204) in the Free State follow the dissolution of the local council by the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in terms of Section 139 (4) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. As a result, the by-elections will include all 21 Ward and 21 PR council seats. There are currently 78 671 registered voters in the 59 voting districts in Metsimaholo. Voter turnout in Metsimaholo in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.56%. In that election the African National Congress won 19 seats, Democratic Alliance won 12 seats, Economic Freedom Fighters won 8, Metsimaholo Community Association won 2 seats and Vryheidfront Plus won 1 seat.
In addition, by-elections in the Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape are scheduled for 29 November 2017.
For this reason the Electoral Commission urges all registered and potential voters in the affected wards to ensure their registration details and addresses are up to date by visiting the voting stations listed below during the weekend of Saturday 7 October and Sunday 8 October 2017 from 08h00 to 17h00.
Furthermore, registered voters are encouraged to go online and easily update their addresses on www.elections.org.za

In the Eastern Cape:
• Ward 32 in EC155 – Nyandeni 4 138 registered voters which became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The ward was won by the African National Congress in the 2016 Municipal Elections and turnout was 46.08%
