Candidates Contesting Municipal By-Elections on 5 and 12 April 2017

Four municipal ward by-elections will take place in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Western Cape on Wednesday 5 April 2017.

The by-election in ward 18 Moretele Municipality in North West which was scheduled to take place tomorrow has been postponed to 12 April 2017 to allow the Electoral Commission to identify and remove voters incorrectly registered in the ward.

Tomorrow’s by-elections are being contested by one independent and nineteen candidates representing seven political parties.  Voting will take place at voting stations between 7am and 9pm.

In Gauteng:

• Ward 73 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB will be contested by Stanley Amos Letsoalo of the African National Congress; Eleanor Anne Huggett of the Democratic Alliance and Shaun Gavaza Nwaiwu of the Economic Freedom Fighters.  The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 62.02%

In KwaZulu-Natal:

• Ward 3 in the uMuziwabantu Municipality – KZN214 will be contested by Xola Chuma Mndela of the African National Congress; Luthando Godlimpi of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Nonyamezelo Ernestina Somhlaba of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Sabelo Philile Dlamini of the National Freedom Party.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.36%

• Ward 23 in the Newcastle Municipality – KZN252 will be contested by Prince Blessing Mwali and independent candidate; Nobentungwa Carol Kumalo of the African Mantungwa Community; Nonhlanhla Miriam Ngcobo of the African National Congress; Sandile Ernest Kubheka of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Mbuso Doris Mhlongo of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Philani Prichand Sibiya of the National Freedom Party.  
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the Election set aside by the Electoral Court. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.48%

In Mpumalanga:

• Ward 1 in the Victor Khanye Municipality – MP311 will be contested by Lucky Steven Nyathi of the African National Congress and Doctor Fanyana Mofokeng of the Economic Freedom Fighters.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 50.75%

In the Western Cape:

• Ward 2 in the Bitou Municipality – WC047 will be contested by Michael Leon Kantey of the Active United Front, Thobeka Patricia Memani of the African National Congress, David John Swart of the Democratic Alliance and Nzuzo Quin Ndinisa of the Economic Freedom Fighters.  The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 76.97%

On 12 April 2017 by-election in the North West:

• Ward 18 in the Moretele Municipality – NW371 will be contested by Sello Lucas Moekeletsi of the African National Congress; Patricia Kedibone Mabusela of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Brenda Rebecca Mashigo of the National Freedom Party.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 52.12%

Special voting in this by-election will now take place on 11 April from 8am to 5pm followed by normal voting on 12 April from 7am to 9pm.
