One municipal ward by-election will take place in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday 29 March 2017.
Five candidates representing five political parties are contesting the by-election in ward 32 in the Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225: Bradley Deon Francis of the African Christian Democratic Party; Merle Joan Williams of the African National Congress; Shawn Adkins of the Democratic Alliance; Arthur Edward Tissong of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Ezrom Sakhile Makhathini of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councilor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.79%
The Electoral Commission is seeking the postponement of a second by-election scheduled for Wednesday 29 March 2017 in ward 7 in uPhongolo Municipality (KZN262).
On Friday 24 March 2017 the Electoral Commission filed a notice of motion in the Electoral Court to postpone the by-election for 90 days following an objection by a political party against the voters’ roll.
Assuming the Electoral Commission is granted permission by the Electoral Court to extend the date of this by-election, a new election timetable for the uPhongolo by-election will be published once the new by-election date is proclaimed by the MEC.
