Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape and Free State on Wednesday 1 March 2017. Ten candidates are contesting the by-elections – one independent candidate and nine candidates representing seven political parties.
One ward by-election is taking place in the Eastern Cape:
• Ward 16 in the Mbizana Municipality – EC443 will be contested by Mpumelelo Elias Mapholoba of the African National Congress; Simon Mfanafuthi Thukwana of the African People’s Convention and Kholisile Stanford Geya of the Economic Freedom Fighters. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.56% Voting will take place at voting stations between 07h00 and 19h00.
One ward by-election is taking place in the Free State:
• Ward 39 in the Mangaung Municipality – MAN will be contested by McDonald Itumeleng Mosala an independent candidate; Nozenza Betty Cezula of the African National Congress; Tshidisang Simon Tsie of the Azanian Alliance Congress; Abel Tatolo Mphahlele of the Congress of the People; Kabelo Christopher Moreeng of the Democratic Alliance; Tsholohelo Moses Mosemeng of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Chiloane Enock Thole of the Forum 4 Service Delivery. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.67% Voting will take place at voting stations between 07h00 and 21h00.
You must be registered in a voting district within ward being contested to be eligible to vote. Voters must provide identification (either a green bar-coded ID book, a smartcard ID or a valid Temporary ID Certificate). Registered voters can SMS their ID number to 32810 (cost R1 per sms) to check their voting station details.
