Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 15 August 2018

Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in the North West and the Northern Cape provinces on Wednesday, 15 August 2018.

The by-elections will be contested by one (1) independent candidate and seven (7) candidates from five (5) political parties.  

In the North West: 
• Ward 21 in Moses Kotane Municipality – NW375 will be contested by Tshepo Confidence Khumalo of the African National Congress (ANC); Andries Monosi Mathe of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Esrom Tshepo Mfati of the Forum 4 Service Delivery; and Mmapilane Florence Motshwaedi of the United Christian Democratic Party. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.74% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 67.54% of valid votes.

In the Northern Cape: 
• Ward 4 in the Siyancuma Municipality – NC078 will be contested by Mariana Erna Kitsher, an independent candidate; Steven Gallant of the ANC; Lemfvia Christiana van Niekerk of the DA; and Emily Nontozelilizwe Tshaka of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership from the party. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 72.96% and the DA candidate won the ward with 45.04% of valid votes.
