Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 15 November 2017

Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in Gauteng and the Western Cape on Wednesday 15 November 2017.

The by-elections will be contested an independent candidate and ten candidates representing seven political parties.  

In Gauteng:

• Ward 59 in Ekurhuleni – EKU will be contested Sibongile Elizabeth Mathonsi of the African National Congress (ANC); Pule Percy Ngonzo of the Democratic Alliance (DA); Simanga Ezekiel Tsotetsi of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Sibongile Terresa Mkhize of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and Sakhile Douglas Zondo of the National Freedom Party (NFP). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.87% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 74.66% of valid votes.

In the Western Cape:

• Ward 93 in the City of Cape Town – CPT will be contested by Butitjie Leo Mbombi an independent candidate; Mthetheleli Tabana of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP); Thando Innocent Pimpi of the ANC; Kanyiswa Yakobi of the African Restoration Party (ARP); Lunga Victor Xhashe of the DA; and Tshepo Khoaeane of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the termination of councillor membership from party. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.17% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 82.85% of valid votes.
