Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 18 October 2017

Six municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the North West on Wednesday, 18 October 2017.

The by-elections will be contested by two independent candidates and 19 candidates representing five political parties.  

In the Free State:

• Ward 12 in the Mangaung Municipality – MAN will be contested by Msebenzi Kennedy Nzaka, an independent candidate; Mamoorosi Margaret Mohulatsi of the African National Congress (ANC); Mamohau Alinah Baza of the Democratic Alliance (DA); and Moeketsi Macmillian Motheane of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.46% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 82.70% of valid votes.

In KwaZulu-Natal:

• Ward 10 in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality – KZN216 will be contested by David Mandlenkosi Mqadi of the ANC; Nkosingiphile Simon Mkize of the EFF; Dick Eric Luthuli of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and Gamalakhe Mvunyelwa Mpisana of the National Freedom Party (NFP). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.51% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 87.71% of valid votes.

• Ward 28 in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality – KZN216 will be contested by Lawrence Sibusiso Vanda of the ANC; Mpumelelo Mbono of the EFF; and Thulani Osborn Thutshini of the IFP. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 65.30% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 94.82% of valid votes.

• Ward 2 in the Richmond Municipality – KZN227 will be contested by Sicelo Thamsanqa Freedom Ngubo of the ANC; Philani Chiya of the EFF and Nontando Precious Latha of the IFP. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.79% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 86.70% of valid votes.

• Ward 1 in the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Municipality – MP304 will be contested by Thokozani Alfred Mazibuko an independent candidate; Sibusiso Walter Motha of the ANC; and Sabelo John Nyembe of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 66.54% and the ANC candidate won with ward with 87.50% of valid votes.

In the North West:

• Ward 1 in the Tswaing Municipality – NW382 will be contested by Jesaya Lebogang Bome of the ANC; and Sophy Maseriteng Monnapula of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 50.97 % and the ANC candidate won with ward with 75.62% of valid votes.
