Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 2 August 2017

Five municipal ward by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West and the Western Cape on Wednesday 2 August 2017.

The by-elections will be contested by one independent candidate and 24 candidates representing nine political parties.

In KwaZulu-Natal: 

• Ward 33 in the Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225 will be contested by Rienus Niemand of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP); Vuyani Freedom Rangxa of the African National Congress (ANC); Cassim Parak of the Al Jama-AH; Nkululeko Fortune Mkhize of the Democratic Alliance (DA); Siyabonga Myaka of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); and James Edward Peter Green of the Inkatha Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 52.90% and the DA candidate won the ward with 44.4% of valid votes.

In Limpopo:

• Ward 9 in the Mogalakwena Municipality – LIM367 will be contested by Rapula William Mafora, an independent candidate; Tjalapa Lucas Mooka of the ANC; Titus Moutlua Mokoka of the DA; and Sello Joel Sinwamadi of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 46.89% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 79.45% of valid votes.

• Ward 1 in the Modimolle/Mookgopong Municipality – LIM368 will be contested by Moswana Stoffel Seodisa of the ANC; Eric Soeu Aphane of the DA; and Klaas Mabula of the EFF The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.41% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 64.42% of valid votes.

In the North West: 

• Ward 1 in the Naledi Municipality – NW392 will be contested by Grace Gamma of the ANC; Alfred Lekgetho of the DA; Diketo Edward Jankies of the EFF; Fighters and Onthusitse Albert Semaha of the Forum 4 Service Delivery. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.97% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 54.93% of valid votes.

In the Western Cape: 

• Ward 4 in the City of Cape Town – CPT will be contested by Nomaxhosa Mejeni of the ACDP; Luthando Goodman Lekevana of the ANC; Mogamad Ganief Ebrahim Hendricks of the Al Jama-AH; Jack Lawrence Miller of the Cape Party / Kaapse Party; Mlulami Wandisile Neville Ngeyi of the DA, Pamela Olga Overmeyer of the Democratic Independent Party; and Siyabulela Mani of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the termination of membership from party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 60.06% and the DA candidate won the ward with 63.84% of valid votes.
