Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 20 September 2017

Three municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Gauteng, Northern Cape and Western Cape on Wednesday 20 September 2017.

The by-elections will be contested by twelve candidates representing six political parties.  

In Gauteng:

• Ward 7 in the Midvaal Municipality – GT422 will be contested by Bongani Comfort Hlatywayo of the African National Congress (ANC); Lesley Theresa Holden Visser of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Andrew Dube of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).  The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 60.85% and the DA candidate won the ward with 76.87% of valid votes.

In the Northern Cape:

• Ward 7 in the Gamagara Municipality – NC453 will be contested by Kagisho Matthews Mangoakwe of the ANC; Hendrik Johannes Fourie of the DA and Okaile Daniel Tlhopile of the EFF.  The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 69.43% and the DA candidate won the ward with 46.76 % of valid votes.

In the Western Cape:

• Ward 37 in the City of Cape Town – CPT will be contested by Luyanda Nyingwa the ANC; Sello Mangwana of the DA; Anwar Adams of the Democratic Independent Party (DIP) Ntsikelelo Vincent Tyandela of the EFF; Tulani Pike of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) and Nimrod Mtutuzeli Sam of the Siswe Ummah Nation (SUN).  The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 50.10.% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 77.66 % of valid votes.
