Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 21 November 2018

Six municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Free State and the Western Cape provinces on Wednesday, 21 November 2018. The by-elections will be contested by five (5) independent candidates and 21 candidates from seven (7) political parties. 

The by-election candidates and voting stations in the Eastern Cape are as follows:

• Ward 4 in Great Kei Municipality – EC123 will be contested by Nonkosinathi Verezar Mevana-Siswana, an independent candidtate; Mzamo Njekanye of the African National Congress (ANC); and Miranda Kontjani of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.28% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 91.31% of valid votes.

• Ward 6 in Great Kei Municipality – EC123 will be contested by Luleka Ndabambi, an independent candidate; Wiver Sinqana of the  of the ANC; Sharne Muriel Jacobs  of the Democratic Alliance (DA); Sizeka Innocentia Mpande of the EFF; and Vuyisile Clay Paule of the United Democratic Movement (UDM). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 54.53% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 55.94% of valid votes.

• Ward 7 in Great Kei Municipality – EC123 will be contested by three (3) independent candidates namely; Fredie Lewis, Khanya Ndarana, and Themba Gqomoroshe.  Zola Tshali of the of the ANC; Malixole Maxwell Eric Matshoba of the EFF; and Nokwanda Patricia Mzimeli of the UDM. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.46% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 83.59% of valid votes.

• Ward 3 in Moqhaka Municipality – FS201 will be contested by Tsie Isaac Borole of the ANC; Nicholas David Muller of the DA; Lebohang Patrick Mosia of the EFF; and Annemarie Elizabeth Jordaan of the Vryheidsfront Plus (VVP). The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.86% and the DA candidate won the ward with 62.55% of valid votes.

• Ward 9 in the Witzenberg Municipality – WC022 will be contested by Mxolisi Joseph Ndaba of the ANC; Johannes Jacobus Mars of the Congress of the People; Koos Goeieman of the DA; and Isak Lluwellyne Swartz of the EFF.  The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 38.14% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 48.19% of valid votes.

• Ward 3 in George Municipality – WC044 will be contested by Johan Du Toit of the African Christian Democratic Party; Erika Luise Brown of the DA; Richard Sedi of the EFF; and Marthinus Johannes Erasmus of the VVP.  The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 76.89% and the DA candidate won the ward with 91.60% of valid votes.
