Three municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape provinces on Wednesday, 22 August 2018.
The by-elections will be contested by 13 candidates from eight (8) political parties.
In the Eastern Cape:
• Ward 26 in the Mbizana Municipality – EC443 will be contested by Maccord Tobo of the African National Congress (ANC); Zukisani Philip Nomkhe of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Mlamli Langa of the National Freedom Party; Nonkululeko Mlomo of the Socialist Party of South Africa; and Jongilizwe Qamza of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward during the by-elections held on 9 November 2016 was 46.88% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 75.47% of valid votes.
In KwaZulu-Natal:
• Ward 7 in the uMngeni Municipality – KZN222 will be contested by Lisa Michelle Andrew of the African Christian Democratic Party; Thokozani Treasure Makhathini of the ANC; Pamela Anne Passmoor of the Democratic Alliance (DA); and Khethukuthula Perfect Mbhele of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 73.75% and the DA candidate won the ward with 80.01 % of valid votes.
In the Northern Cape
• Ward 1 in KHâl-MA Municipality – NC067 will be contested by Benedictus Benjamin Josop of the ANC; Victor Tshidiso Matabane of the DA; Hermanus Frans Julie of the EFF; and Nicolaas Henry Jano of the Khâi-MA Onafhanklike Kandidate Koalisie. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of termination of councilor membership by the party.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 62.27% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 64.55% of valid votes.
