Six (6) municipal ward by-elections will take place in four (4) provinces namely the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 23 October 2019.
The by-elections will be contested by eighteen (18) candidates from five (5) political parties, and two (2) independent candidates.
The details of the by-elections are as follows:
In the Eastern Cape:
• Ward 05 in Amahlathi Municipality – EC124 is uncontested due to one (1) candidate, namely Nomvuyo Zelna Klaas from the African National Congress (ANC) contesting this ward.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.48% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 62.54% of valid votes.
• Ward 34 in Enoch Mgijima Municipality – EC139 will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely; Buti Quqa from the ANC and Mawethu Bango from the Democratic Alliance (DA).
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 67.25% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 56.08% of valid votes. Note that the voting stations in this ward will close earlier and will be open from 7 am to 7 pm.
• Ward 07 in Umzimvubu Municipality – EC442 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely; Fakazile Ntwakumba from the African Independent Congress (AIC), Mthetheleli Columbus Ntsengwane from the ANC and Nomaza Viola Nomnganga from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.88% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 73.45% of valid votes.
In the Free State:
• Ward 08 in Kopanong Municipality – FS162 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely; Thuso Cronje Johanne, an independent candidate, Mziwanele Vincent Malgas from the ANC, Richard Willem Van Wyk from the DA and Paseka Edwin Mokoqo from the EFF.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 64.00% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 77.60% of valid votes.
In Gauteng:
• Ward 92 in Ekurhuleni Municipality – EKU will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely; Harold Wilfred Thomas from the ANC, Graham Anthony Keith Gersbach from the DA and Morekwa Kenny Phogole from the EFF.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 66.88% and the DA candidate won the ward with 78.82% of valid votes.
In KwaZulu-Natal:
• Ward 09 in uMhlathuze Municipality – KZN282 will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely; Bonginkosi Erick Majola, an independent candidate, Mandla Mdaka from the ANC, Gugulethu Portia Ntombela from the DA, Silindile Thobisile Zungu from the EFF and Zonita Grobbelaar from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 60.20% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 52.17% of valid votes.
