Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 24 October 2018

Four municipal ward by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Western Cape provinces on Wednesday, 24 October 2018.

The by-elections will be contested by one independent and 13 candidates from six political parties.  

In KwaZulu-Natal: 

• Ward 28 in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality – KZN 216 will be contested by Victor Bekithemba Zulu of the African National Congress (ANC); Musawenkosi Collin Xolo of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); and Lindeni Goodness Jama of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2017 municipal by-elections was 45.94% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 91.41% of valid votes.

In Limpopo: 

• Ward 26 in Greater Letaba Municipality – LIM 332 will be contested by Motsiri Johannes Maseapata an independent candidate; Makoma Josephine Mohale of the ANC; Ngaletjane Margaret Makokotlela of the EFF; Sekgobela Simon Raseala of the Limpopo Residents Association; and Matome Phillip Maake of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 54.46% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 75.93% of valid votes.

In the Western Cape:

• Ward 3 in Breede Valley Municipality – WC025 will be contested by Patrick Benjamin Januarie of the ANC; Luwellyn Gregory Willemse of the DA; and Laurika Olivia Tafireyi of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.54% and the DA candidate won the ward with 49.10% of valid votes.

• Ward 8 in Knysna Municipality – WC048 will be contested by Thando Charles Matika of the ANC; Sharron Hartnick of the DA; and Aphumle Amandus Kolanisi of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.55% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 69.82% of valid votes.
