Four municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Western Cape provinces on Wednesday, 26 February 2020.
The by-elections will be contested by 15 candidates from nine (9) political parties.
In the Eastern Cape:
• Ward 6 in Mhlontlo Municipality– EC156 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely, Mbulelo John Vunguvungu of the African National Congress (ANC), Phillemon Tywaku of the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Andile Sikhutshwa of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and Bongoziwe Yullender Mabandla from the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 40.50% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 80.23% of valid votes.
In KwaZulu-Natal:
• Ward 1 in uMsinga Municipality– KZN244 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely, Thabo Christian Makhunga of the ANC, Bernard Ximba of the EFF, Mbuso Buthelezi of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and Slindile Ignatia Sishi from the National Democratic Convention (NDC).
The ward was previously represented by the IFP and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.23% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 73.74% of valid votes.
In Limpopo:
• Ward 41 in Thulamela Municipality– LIM343 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely, Mphedziseni Johannes Ligaraba of the ANC, Avhatakali Malovhele of the Azanian People's Organisation (APO), and Nthatheni Colbert Munzhedzi of the EFF.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 45.22% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 54.58% of valid votes.
In the Western Cape:
• Ward 8 in Matzikama Municipality– WC011 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely, Ricardo Xavier Roberto Kock of the ANC, Piet Williams Owies of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Andries Jacobs of the EFF, and Frederik Steenkamp of the Khoi-San Heavenly Party.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and the ward seat became vacant as a result of the councilor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 54.41% and the DA candidate won the ward with 52.88% of valid votes.
