Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 27 November 2019

Five (5) municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo on Wednesday, 27 November 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by nineteen (19) candidates from ten (10) political parties.  

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

• Ward 20 in the Mnquma Municipality – EC122 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely; Kwandiswa Gobeni from the African National Congress (ANC), Libowe Phongoma from the Congress of the People (COPE), Bulela Mndai from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and Malibongwe Masekwana from the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 54.74% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 69.26% of valid votes.

Note that this voting station will be open from 7 am and will close at 7 pm.

• Ward 11 in the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality – EC129 will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely; Ntombomzi Klaas from the ANC and Ncumisa Mbande from the EFF. 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 9 November 2016 by-election was 27.75% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 52.66% of valid votes.

• Ward 13 in Intsika Yethu Municipality – EC135 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely; Nosakhele Sonkosi from the ANC, Lusanda Bomoyi from the EFF, and Singiswa Tshangana from the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s resignation.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.46% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 87.68% of valid votes.

Note that this voting station will be open from 7 am and will close at 7 pm.

• Ward 04 in Mtubatuba Municipality – KZN275 will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely; Phumowakhe Nxumalo from the ANC, Annacletah Veronicah Mabika from the Democratic Alliance (DA), Lucky Musawenkosi Manyuka from the EFF, Bonginkosi Mkhawuleni Zulu from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and Joseph Thami Mthethwa from the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP). 

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s resignation.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 23 May 2018 by-election was 53.06% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 47.19% of valid votes.

• Ward 02 in Thabazimbi Municipality – LIM361 will be contested by five (5) candidates, namely; Molefi Alpheus Motaung from the ANC, Johanna Elizabeth Albertina Swanepoel from the DA, Kererilwe Maria Mtsweni from the EFF, Matlakala Francina Makgale from the Thabazimbi Residents Association, and Frederik Jacobus Erasmus from the Vryheidsfront Plus (FF+). 

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s resignation.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 69.72% and the DA candidate won the ward with 57.16% of valid votes.
