Four municipal ward by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 30 May 2018.
The by-elections will be contested by 16 candidates from seven (7) political parties.
In KwaZulu-Natal:
• Ward 10 in eThekwini – ETH will be contested by Timothy Easton Hilliar of the African National Congress (ANC); Terence Peter Collins of the Democratic Alliance (DA); Dumisani Sibusiso Ngcobo the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); and Ahmed Ismail Vawda of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 70.95% and the DA candidate won the ward with 90.89% of valid votes.
• Ward 7 in Nkandla municipality – KZN286 will be contested by Bahle Welson Sibiya of the ANC; Zandile Sizakele Makhanya of the EFF; Nkosinathi Skhumbuzo Khumalo of the IFP; and Perfect Ziphozonke Khuzwayo of the National Freedom Party (NFP). The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 69.93% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 51.03% of valid votes.
In the Western Cape:
• Ward 3 in Saldanha Bay Municipality – WC014 will be contested by Barenice Claudine Cortje of the ANC; Charleen Claudette van Nooi of the DA; Bongani Augustine Booi of the EFF; and Kathleen Veronica Heynes of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (ICOSA). The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.89% and the DA candidate won the ward with 70.12% of valid votes.
• Ward 13 in the Oudshoorn Municipality – WC045 will be contested by Daniel Oppels of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP); Michael Wagenaar of the ANC; Marcellis Bouvier Gregory Theyse of the DA; and Romeo Prins of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.94% and the DA candidate won the ward with 60.20% of valid votes.
