Four municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Free State, Gauteng, and the North West provinces on Wednesday, 5 September 2018.
The by-elections will be contested by one independent candidate and 15 candidates from six (6) political parties.
In the Free State:
• Ward 2 in Nala Municipality – FS185 will be contested by Pheelo Daniel Mabaso, an independent candidate; Mtandeki Stephen Radebe of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP); Magwaneng Selina Nonny Tsiloane of the African National Congress (ANC); Bri-Anne Antoinette Masencamp of the Democratic Alliance (DA); and Motseki Godfrey Motseki of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.28% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 48.68% of valid votes.
• Ward 12 in Ngwathe Municipality – FS203 will be contested by Matsenane Maria Peggy Nonyana of the ANC; Andries Petrus Vrey of the DA; Lehlohonolo Thomas Matsobane of the EFF; and Phillippus Petrus Van Der Merwe of the Vryheidsfront Plus. The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 68.65% and the DA candidate won the ward with 71.17% of valid votes.
In Gauteng:
• Ward 37 in Tshwane Metro – TSH will be contested by Mpho Lawrence Chauke of the ACDP; Zacharia Sekete Ntohla of the ANC; Amanda Martha Noordman of the DA; Gwadabane Kenneth Manganye of the EFF; and Victor Lesetja Lebelo of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 52.21% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 66.73 % of valid votes.
In the North West:
• Ward 7 in Lekwa-Teemane Municipality – NW396 will be contested by Rapule Elias Kwena of the ANC; and Boitumelo Nancy Dipico of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.54% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 76.99 % of valid votes.
