Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 6 November 2019

Seven (7) municipal ward by-elections will take place in two (2) provinces namely the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 6 November 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by twenty-two (22) candidates from five (5) political parties, and one (1) independent candidate.  

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

In the Eastern Cape:

• Ward 02 in Blue Crane Route Municipality – EC102 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely; Mzoxolo Norman Branders from the African National Congress (ANC), Jonathan Malvin Martin from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Mninimzi Atwell Ngcipe from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 65.85% and the DA candidate won the ward with 59.09% of valid votes. 

• Ward 03 in Ngqushwa Municipality – EC126 will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely; Bulela Benson Ntabeni from the ANC and Thotyelwa Jeanette Ntlokwana from the EFF. 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.37% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 94.48% of valid votes.

• Ward 22 in Umzimvubu Municipality – EC442 will be contested by two (2) candidates, namely; Noxolo Tshalana from the ANC and Asiphe Mbebe from the EFF. 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s death.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.28% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 76.15% of valid votes. 

In KwaZulu-Natal: 

• Ward 06 in uMzumbe Municipality – KZN213 will be contested by three (3) candidates, namely; Nokulunga Perceviarance Khumalo from the ANC, Eric Sandile Ngcobo from the DA and Mpumelelo Rodney Mkhize from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.32% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 89.23% of valid votes.

• Ward 04 in Mpofana Municipality – KZN223 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely; Bongani Fortune Madlala from the ANC, Siyabonga Junior Ngubane from the EFF, Qinisela Cyprian Mchunu from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and Mboniseni Nowa Mthalane from the National Freedom Party (NFP). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 66.51% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 53.29% of valid votes.

• Ward 33 in Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely; Sibonakaliso Givenson Zulu from the ANC, Suraya Reddy from the DA, Nobuhle Princess Shabalala from the EFF and Mkhonzeni Christopher Mazeka from the IFP

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout in the by-election held on 2 August 2017 was 33.76% and the DA candidate won the ward with 47.69% of valid votes.

• Ward 18 in KwaDukuza Municipality – KZN292 will be contested by four (4) candidates, namely; Sphesihle Brian Ntuli, an independent candidate, Ntobeko Zulu from the ANC, Nhlakanipho Senzosenkosi Zulu from the EFF and Rebecca Wendy Zulu from the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 69.36% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 59.18% of valid votes.
