Two municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 8 August 2018.
The by-elections will be contested by nine candidates from seven political parties.
Details of the by-elections are as follows:
• Ward 29 in the Mbhashe Municipality – EC121 will be contested by Philile Mayiji of the African National Congress (ANC); Kholiwe Dyomfana of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Nomandla Tshandana of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania; and Nothando Manqata of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 61.83% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 66.62% of valid votes.
• Ward 3 in Walter Sisulu Municipality – EC145 will be contested by Sivuyile Mnikina of the ANC; Khanyisa Sidney September of the African Transformation Movement; Matthee De Ridder Nel of the Democratic Alliance; Bongile David Xamlashe of the EFF; and Tshepiso Enerst Nodwele of the Maletswai Civic Association. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.14% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 53.43% of valid votes.
