Candidates contesting Municipal By-elections on 27 September 2017

Three municipal ward by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape on Wednesday 27 September 2017.

The by-elections will be contested by 11 candidates representing six political parties.

The by-elections will take place as follows:

In KwaZulu-Natal:

• Ward 3 in the eNdumeni Municipality – KZN241 will be contested Mathula Innocent Nkosi of the African National Congress (ANC); Vincent Mbuso Ntombela of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF); Thabane Penuel Mlotshwa of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and Mfanafuthi Caiphas Ntsele of the National Freedom Party (NFP). The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 62.50%, and the IFP candidate won the ward with 58.10% of valid votes.

In Mpumalanga:

• Ward 10 in the Nkomazi Municipality – MP324 will be contested by Vincent Tsepo Nyambi of the ANC; Thulane Alfred Ngomane of the Congress of the People (COPE); and Michael Solomon Mabaso of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 60.79%, and the ANC candidate won the ward with 87.52% of valid votes.

In the Northern Cape:

• Ward 4 in the Dawid Kruiper  – NC087 will be contested by Louna Stander of the ANC; Anna Brill of the COPE; Andeline Ghafoor of the Democratic Alliance (DA); and Elizabeth van Standen of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 19.40%, and the ANC candidate won the ward with 57.69% of valid votes.

Voters are reminded that special voting will take place at voting stations as well as home visits on 26 September 2017 between 08h00 and 17h00. Voting stations will be open on 27 September 2017 between 07h00 until 21h00. Voters should take their identity document (ID) with them – either a green barcoded ID book, a smartcard ID or a valid Temporary ID Certificate.
