Candidates contesting Municipal by-elections on 24 May 2017

Municipal by-elections will take place KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape on Wednesday, 24 May 2017.

KwaZulu-Natal:

By-elections in KwaZulu-Natal will take place in Nquthu Municipality (KZN 242) following the dissolution of the local council. As a result, the by-elections will include all 17 ward and 16 PR council seats. There are currently 81 085 registered voters in the 116 voting districts in Nquthu.

There are a total of 359 candidates (238 ward candidates and 121 PR candidates) representing 14 political parties contesting the Nquthu by-elections.

Voter turnout in Nquthu in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.27%.  In that election the Inkatha Freedom Party won 15 seats, the African National Congress won 14 seats, the National Freedom Party won two seats, and the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters won one seat each.

Voting stations will be open from 7am to 7pm for voting.


Western Cape:

By-elections being held in Ward 7 in the Beaufort West Municipality – WC053 will be contested by Stanley Nkanyezi of the African National Congress; Jacob Jeffrey Van der Linde of the Democratic Alliance and Benjamin Faas of the Economic Freedom Fighters. 

The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance which won it with 46.84% of votes in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.79%. The ward became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Voting stations will be open from 7am to 9pm for voting.

Voters are reminded that they must be registered in a voting district within the ward being contested to be eligible to vote. Voters must provide identification (either a green bar-coded identity (ID) book, a smartcard ID or a valid Temporary ID Certificate) upon registration. Registered voters can SMS their ID number to 32810 (cost is R1 per SMS) to check their voting station details, or can visit the ‘For Voters’ section at www.elections.org.za.
