Four municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape on Wednesday 14 June 2017.
The by-elections will be contested by thirteen candidates representing seven political parties.
Voting in the Eastern Cape by-elections will take place between 07h00 and 19h00. Voting stations in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape will be in operation between 07h00 and 21h00.
In Eastern Cape:
• Ward 15 in the Mnquma Municipality – EC122 will be contested by Sithembiso Ncetezo of the African National Congress; Thembelani Sikiti of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Anderson Sihele of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.20% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 82.79% of valid votes.
In KwaZulu-Natal:
• Ward 7 in the uPhongolo Municipality – KZN262 will be contested by Thembokuhle Abednego Ntshangase of the African National Congress; France Sizwe Phakathi of the Economic Freedom Fighters; Gugulakhe Christopher Mamba of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Phindavele Mlungisi Sikhosana of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 46.84% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 55.62 % of valid votes.
In Mpumalanga:
• Ward 45 in the City of Mbombela – MP326 will be contested by Lifa Blessing Nkosi of the African National Congress and Lucia Phethile Maseko of the Economic Freedom Fighters. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 57.68% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 82.34 % of valid votes.
In the Northern Cape:
• Ward 24 in the Sol Plaatje Municipality – NC091 will be contested by Melga Sharon Tobias of the African National Congress; Sharon Merle Steyn of the Democratic Alliance; Lettie Papier of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Hendrik Jacobus Van den Berg of Vryheidsfront Plus. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 70.14% and the DA candidate won with ward with 82.84 % of valid votes.
