Candidates contesting municipal by-elections on 6 June 2018

CENTURION – Five municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and the North West provinces on Wednesday, 6 June 2018.

The by-elections will be contested by one (1) independent candidate and 19 candidates from eight (8) political parties. 

In the Eastern Cape: 

  • Ward 18 in the Buffalo City – BUF will be contested by Andrew Michael Sokolich of the African National Congress (ANC); Liveni Quisto Sani of the Congress of the People (COPE); Jason Scott Mc Dowell of the Democratic Alliance (DA); and Nosiphiwo Runqu of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 71.34% and the DA candidate won the ward with 88.15% of valid votes.

  • Ward 21 in the Buffalo City – BUF will be contested by Edwin Owen Mpumelelo Fini of the ANC; Beauty Nozibele Nongqele of COPE; and Luyanda Vetyeka of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 50.29% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 4.71 % of valid votes.

  • Ward 9 in Ngquza Hill Municipality – EC153 will be contested by Kholiswa Vava of the ANC; Tonny Ntshangase of the African People’s Convention (APC); Mandla Gogo of the DA; and Thandokazi Xhobiso of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.66% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 81.66% of valid votes.

In Mpumalanga: 

  • Ward 7 in Dr JS Moroka Municipality – MP316 will be contested by Marks Lucky Ntuli, an independent candidate; Phindile Phumzile Mnguni of the ANC; Simon Phishwane Aphane of the EFF; Raphuti Simon Mogajane of the Freedom 4 Service Delivery (F4SD); and Ngakwabo James Thompson Masanabo of the Sindawonye Progressive Party (SPP). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 56.30% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 69.95% of valid votes.

In the North West:

  • Ward 4 in Ganyesa/Pomfret Municipality – NW397 will be contested by Puso Phineas Moeng of the ANC; Keduetswe Petunia Loabile of the EFF; Modirwa Sylvester Tong of the F4SD; and Gookeditswe Sam Kgatlhane of the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP). The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. 

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.49% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 73.00 % of valid votes.
