Candidates contesting the municipal by-elections on 3 June 2015

Municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 3 June 2015.

The by-elections will be contested by 12 candidates in 5 wards. The candidates represent 12 parties and 3 are independents.

One by-election will take place in each of the 5 provinces where by-elections have been declared:
•   Free State: Ward 10 in the Moqhaka [Kroonstad] Municipality – FS201 will be contested by Mpho Samuel Chakane of the African National Congress; and Paulus Thebe Motale of the Congress of the People. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

•   Gauteng: Ward 5 in the Emfuleni [Vereeniging] Municipality – GT421 will be contested by Maureen Sylvia Dorothy Dosoudil of the African National Congress; and Phillipus Nothnagel of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

•   Mpumalanga: Ward 29 in the Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] Municipality – MP313 will be contested by Themba Lucas Mahlangu and Thibedi Robert Madisa, both independent candidates; Maria Nomgqibelo Mathibela of the African National Congress; and Anna Sophia Grobler of the Democratic Alliance.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

•   Northern Cape: Ward 4 in the Magareng [Warrenton] Municipality – NC093 will be contested by Mmalefu Aphaphina Mochane, an independent candidate; and Augus Kadea Zalisa of the African National Congress. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

•   Western Cape: Ward 5 in the Theewaterskloof [Caledon] Municipality – WC031 will be contested by Carnen Avengale De Wee of the African National Congress; and Cornelius Marthinus Lamprecht of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 24 552 voters were registered in the 17 voting districts where by-elections were scheduled to take place.
