Candidates contesting the municipal by-elections scheduled for 2 July 2014

Municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 2 July 2014.

A total of 20 wards will be contested by 55 candidates, representing eight (8) political parties and four (4) independent candidates.

One (1) by-election will take place in the Eastern Cape:
•  Ward 16 in Ntabankulu [Ntabankulu] Municipality – EC444 will be contested by Anderson Lumkile Mndela, an independent candidate; and Thembakazi Msuthu of the African National Congress. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Eight (8) by-elections will take place in Gauteng:
•  Ward 20 in Ekurhuleni [East Rand] Municipality – EKU will be contested by Monica Mnguni of the African National Congress; and Jill Ada Humphreys of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the councillor being elected to serve in the Provincial Legislature.
•  Ward 24 in Ekurhuleni [East Rand] Municipality – EKU will be contested by Daphney Jokolina Sibambo of the African National Congress; Stefanie Kruger of the Democratic Alliance; and Bhekani Zephreid Ntshangase of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the councillor being elected to serve in the Provincial Legislature.
•  Ward 92 in Ekurhuleni [East Rand] Municipality – EKU will be contested by Ntanganedzeni Mudau of the African National Congress; and Ashley Theresa Rutherford of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the councillor being elected to serve in the Provincial Legislature.
•  Ward 11 in Randfontein [Randfontein] Municipality – GT482 will be contested by Muntu Moses Mtyotywa of the African National Congress; and Nozipho Iris Ndlela of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
•  Ward 57 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB will be contested by Beverley Delyse Turk of the African National Congress; Faeeza Chame of the Democratic Alliance; and Lwazi Jali of the Inkatha Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 58 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB will be contested by Peter Jakobus Jacobs and Rickey Kashore Nair, both independent candidates; Luvhengo Jordaan Musesi of the African National Congress; Mahomed Haniff Ahmed Manjoo of AL JAMA-AH; Devanand Maharaj of the Congress of the People; and Alex Christians of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 112 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB will be contested by Leverne Monique Young of the African National Congress; and Candice Christine James of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 118 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB will be contested by Johaan Penuel Mkhumbuzi of the African National Congress; Michele Spadino-Pippa of the Democratic Alliance; Thandazile Portia Buthelezi of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Matshidiso Monica Kateregga of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Seven (7) by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:
•  Ward 18 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH will be contested by Mboniseni Christopher Mtshali of the African National Congress; and Bruce Anthony Sutcliffe of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the councillor being elected to serve in the National Assembly.
•  Ward 36 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH will be contested by Constantina Tsepouras of the African National Congress; and Shaun Ryley of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 52 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH will be contested by Rajendrakumar Manowah of the African National Congress; Bradley Singh of the Democratic Alliance; and Neresh Maharaj of the Minority Front. The ward was previously represented by the Minority Front and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 73 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH will be contested by Kasaval Chetty of the African National Congress; Devaraj Rama Pillay of the Democratic Alliance; and Madhanlall Dasarath of the Minority Front. The ward was previously represented by the Minority Front and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 4 in Endumeni [Dundee] Municipality – KZN241 will be contested by Hassen Satchmo Bheki Ngobese, an independent candidate; Dudu Pretty Ncala of the African National Congress; Nqobizitha Seyamah of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Mzikayifani Paltrochel Nyawo of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 6 in Hlabisa [Somkele] Municipality – KZN274 will be contested by Phiwayinkosi T. Mdletshe of the African National Congress; Themba Herbert Zungu of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Mboniseni Leftenel Velaphi Mdletshe of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 22 in KwaDukuza [Stanger] Municipality – KZN292 will be contested by Rigby Calvert Heenan of the African National Congress; and Malcolm William Hubner of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the councillor being elected to serve in the Provincial Legislature.

Two (2) by-elections will take place in Mpumalanga:
•  Ward 30 in Govan Mbeki [Highveld Ridge] Municipality – MP307 will be contested by Neo Ingrid Mongale of the African National Congress; Piet Retief Bosch of the Democratic Alliance; and Aranda Donel Nel-Buitendag of the Vryheidsfront Plus. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the councillor being elected to serve in the National Assembly.
•  Ward 18 in Emalahleni [Witbank] Municipality – MP312 will be contested by Stanley Maurice Hlophe of the African National Congress; and Jolandi Schneider-Breetzke of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

One (1) by-election will take place in the Northern Cape:
•  Ward 9 in KAI !GARIB [Keimoes] Municipality – NC082 will be contested by Estelle Elfreda Fritz of the African National Congress; Willem Jaftha of the Congress of the People; and Maria Mathilda Appies of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Congress of the People and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

One (1) by-election will take place in the Western Cape:
•  Ward 5 in Knysna [Knysna] Municipality – WC048 will be contested by Alberto Riccardo Marbi of the African National Congress; and Eleanore Rochelle Jacquelene Spies of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 242,223 voters are registered in the 112 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
