Candidates contesting the municipal by-elections taking place on 17 September 2014

Municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 17 September 2014.

A total of 11 wards will be contested by 32 candidates, representing nine (9) political parties and five (5) independent candidates. One (1) ward is uncontested.

Two (2) by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape:
•  Ward 5 in Tsolwana [Tarkastad] Municipality – EC132 will be contested by Gredwill Jerome van Heerden of the African National Congress; and Vuyisile Petrus Blom of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by an independent candidate and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 11 in Mbizana [Bizana] Municipality – EC443 will be contested by Sikhumbuzo Michael Faku of the African National Congress; and Sivuyile Nokhwela of the African People’s Convention. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

One (1) by-election will take place in the Free State:
•  Ward 1 in Maluti a Phofung [Qwa-Qwa] Municipality – FS194 will be contested by Teboho John Tshabalala, an independent candidate; Thabo Daniel Moloi of the African National Congress; and Pulane Emily Morotolo of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

One (1) by-election will take place in Gauteng:
•  Ward 88 in Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality – TSH will be contested by Joseph Bafana Nkosi of the African National Congress; Maatane Rosina Maake of the Democratic Alliance; Azwinndini David Munzhedzi of the Economic Freedom Fighters; and Mbeliki Thomas Selokela of the Inkatha Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Two (2) by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:
•  Ward 12 in Newcastle [Newcastle] Municipality – KZN252 will be contested by Reuben Moses Molelekoa of the African National Congress; Mcebo Sizwe Mabaso of the Congress of the People; Thanduyise Norman Mkhwanazi of the Inkatha Freedom Party; Soka Moffat Mdhlalose of the National Freedom Party; and Percy Sibusiso Sithebe of the South African Determined Volunteers. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
•  Ward 5 in Mthonjaneni [Melmoth] Municipality – KZN285 will be contested by Bhekuyise Maurice Ndwandwe of the African National Congress; Gloria Dumile Nxumalo of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Mzwenhlanhla Jackson Dlamini of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

One (1) by-election will take place in Mpumalanga:
•  Ward 28 in Mbombela [Nelspruit] Municipality – MP322 will be contested by Thubu Lucky Sithole, an independent candidate; and Sabelo Russon Masuku of the African National Congress. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Three (3) by-elections are scheduled to take place in North West of which one is uncontested:
•  Ward 6 in Tswaing [Delareyville] Municipality – NW382 will be contested by Toli John Tladi, an independent candidate; Ananias Lenkaletse Noko of the African National Congress; Tshotlhego James Sebola of the Democratic Alliance; and Jacob Zwelinzima Somenze of the Economic Freedom Fighters. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Joyce Malepe of the African National Congress is the only candidate contesting Ward 24 in Greater Taung [Reivilo] Municipality – NW394. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.
•  Ward 7 in Matlosana [Klerksdorp] Municipality – NW403 will be contested by Jabulane Samuel Dhladhla and Seadimo Angeline Madibo, both independent candidates; Happy Frans Saudi of the African National Congress; and Solomon Velaphi Matontsi of the African People’s Convention. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

One (1) by-election will take place in the Western Cape:
•  Ward 7 in Bitou [Greater Plettenberg Bay] Municipality – WC047 will be contested by Samuel William Jansen of the African National Congress; and Annelise Renata Olivier of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00 except Ward 11 in Mbizana [Bizana] Municipality – EC443 where voting hours will be from 07h00 to 19h00. A total of 63 466 voters are registered in the 65 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
