Results of the Municipal By-Elections Held on 11 November 2015

The Democratic Alliance won six wards and the African National Congress won four wards in by-elections contested in six provinces yesterday.

The results saw the Democratic Alliance retaining five wards in the Free State, Gauteng, North West and Western Cape and gaining one ward from the African National Congress in the Western Cape.  The African National Congress retained four wards in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and North West

Voter turnout varied between 14.15% and 59.17% with an average of 28.97%. Two wards were uncontested.

The new councillors for the African National Congress are:
• Eastern Cape: Nomadama Nobuntu Mgidi in Ward 8 in the Engcobo [Engcobo] Municipality – EC137. The ward was uncontested so no voting took place.  The seat was retained by the party. 
• Gauteng: Mosadisadi Christina Kekana in Ward 16 in the Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality – TSH. The seat was retained by the party with 76.63% of the 2 819 votes cast. Voter turnout was 21.14%.
• Mpumalanga: Njabulo Sydney Mnisi in Ward 20 in the Nkomazi [Nkomazi] Municipality – MP324. The seat was retained by the party with 89.07% of the 949 votes cast.  Voter turnout was 18.03%.
• North West: Thembeka Obittah Vilakazi in Ward 13 in the Matlosana [Klerksdorp] Municipality – NW403.  The ward was uncontested so no voting took place.  The seat was retained by the party.

The new councillors for the Democratic Alliance are:
• Free State: Salomon Hercules Francois De Jager in Ward 13 in the Ngwathe [Parys] Municipality – FS203.  The seat was retained by the party with 98.78% of the 1 560 votes cast. Voter turnout was 43.41%. 
• Gauteng: Mia Snyman in Ward 73 in the City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB. The seat was retained by the party with 92.70% of the 3 225 votes cast.  Voter turnout was 21.83%.
• North West: Martin Coetzee in Ward 17 in the Rustenburg [Rustenburg] Municipality – NW373.  The seat was retained by the party with 85.97% of the 1 320 votes cast.  Voter turnout was 14.15%.
• Western Cape:  Jo-Ann De Wet in Ward 14 in the Drakenstein [Paarl] Municipality – WC023.  The party won the seat with 57.44% of the 3 320 votes cast.  Voter turnout was 59.17%. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress.
• Western Cape:  Evelyn Lorraine Sauls in Ward 1 in the Cape Agulhas [Bredasdorp] Municipality – WC033.  The seat was retained by the party with 51.04% of the 1 992 votes cast. Voter turnout was 56.57%.
• Western Cape:  George Jacobus Kersop in Ward 2 in the Oudtshoorn [Oudtshoorn] Municipality – WC045.  The seat was retained by the party with 73.96% of the 1 983 votes cast. Voter turnout was 51.79%.
