Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 15 January 2020

In the by-elections contested yesterday in the North West, the (ANC) retained nine (9) seats and the Vryheidsfront Plus (FF+) won a seat over the Democratic Alliance (DA). 

The new ANC councillors are:

• Japhta Mothusi Raphadu in Ward 16 in the Moses Kotane Municipality – NW375. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 76.40% of the votes cast compared to 74.04% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 42.35%.
• Isaac Jefry Kock in Ward 01 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 48.58% of the votes cast compared to 61.81% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 62.07%.
• Gotsilekgosi John Batsi in Ward 02 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 74.03% of the votes cast compared to 53.43% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 58.55%
• Tumiso Freddy Tlhole in Ward 03 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 58.86% of the votes cast compared to 53.12% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 56.86%.
• Lesego Daniel Motlapele in Ward 04 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 66.12% of the votes cast compared to 79.57% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 57.20%.
• Lesego Rachel Sila in Ward 05 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 52.42% of the votes cast compared to 68.53% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 56.27%.
• Nobakhe Grace Masilo in Ward 06 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 61.63% of the votes cast compared to 68.07% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 53.41%.
• Dipuo Grace Ahmed in Ward 07 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 57.05% of the votes cast compared to 52.08% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 56.90%.
• Tshepo Godwin Khwenenyane in Ward 08 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 60.82% of the votes cast compared to 75.56% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 54.64%.

The new FF+ councillor is:

• Nico Mostert Kilian in Ward 09 in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393. The party gained the seat from the DA who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 50.74% compared to 40.61% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 61.61%.

As a result of the dissolved council in the Mamusa Municipality – NW393, nine (9) Proportional Representation (PR) seats were also contested yesterday. The African Independent Congress (AIC) gained one (1) seat, the ANC won two (2) seats, the DA gained one (1) seat and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) gained five (5) seats.
