Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 18 September 2019

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Northern Cape and Western Cape the African National Congress (ANC) won one (1) seat from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and retained five (5) seats, the DA retained three (3) seats and the Vryheidsfront Plus (FF+) won one (1) seat from the DA gained in the 2016 Municipal Elections. 

The six (6) new ANC councillors are:

• Tembinkosi Ngxangani in Ward 15 in the Engcobo Municipality – EC137. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 79.72% of the votes cast compared to 80.89% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 35.07%.
• Mlawuli Marasha in Ward 29 in the King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality – EC157. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 62.14% of the votes cast compared to 47.45% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 41.28%.
• Mzimkulu Morris Ngabase in Ward 20 in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality – NMA. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 66.65% of the votes cast compared to 72.24% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 36.21%.
• Mabhungu Moses Mkhizei in Ward 18 in the Msunduzi Municipality – KZN225. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 88.38% of the votes cast compared to 76.51% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 33.31%.
• Nkosinathi Conrad Ngcongo in Ward 10 in the Ubuhlebezwe Municipality – KZN434. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 76.13% of the votes cast compared to 90.38% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 36.27%.
• Maxwell Heins in Ward 03 in the Cederberg Municipality – WC012. The party gained the seat from the DA who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 57.85% compared to 56.57% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 58.63%.

The three (3) new DA councillors are:

• Johannes Dick Green in Ward 19 in the Buffalo City Municipality – BUF. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 71.03% of the votes cast compared to 73.67% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 26.42%.
• Abraham Willem Petrus Van Der Westhuizen in Ward 01 in the Ga-Segonyana Municipality – NC452. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 59.03% of the votes cast compared to 74.50% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 40.15%.
• Wilhelm Joriaas America in Ward14 in the Saldanha Bay Municipality – WC014. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 56.29% of the votes cast compared to 84.32% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 41.86%.

The one (1) new FF+ councillor is

• Everhardus Johannes Jacobus Laing in Ward 02 in the Jb Marks Municipality – NW405. The party gained the seat from the DA who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 41.71% compared to 57.87% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 41.02%.
