Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 21 August 2019

During the by-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape, the African National Congress (ANC) retained two (2) seats, the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained one (1) seat and the National Freedom Party (NFP) won one (1) seat from the ANC gained in the 2016 Municipal Elections. 

The two (2) new ANC councillors are:

• Bongani Ntokozo Dlamini in Ward 08 in the Thembisile Hani Municipality – MP315. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 74.87% of the votes cast compared to 79.01% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 32.92%.
• Xolisa Wilberforce Ngwekazi in Ward 95 in the City Of Cape Town Municipality – CPT. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 76.67% of the votes cast compared to 82.54% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 29.79%.

The one (1) new DA councillor is:

• Hilton Romeo Tashwell Stroebel in Ward 05 in the Knysna Municipality – WC048. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 40.52% of the votes cast compared to 74.31% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 58.83%.

The one (1) new NFP councillor is:

• Philani Godfrey Mavundla in Ward 07 in the Umvoti Municipality – KZN245. The party gained the seat from the ANC who won it in the 2016 Municipal Elections. The total votes cast was 56.69% compared to 83.22% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 59.66%.
