During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, the African National Congress (ANC) retained five (5) seats and the DA retained one (1) seat gained in the 2016 Municipal Elections.
The five (5) new ANC councillors are:
• Nomvuyo Zelna Klaas in Ward 05 in the Amahlathi Municipality – EC124. The ward was uncontested and the party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections.
• Buti Quqa in Ward 34 in the Enoch Mgijima Municipality – EC139. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 52.29% of the votes cast compared to 56.08% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 53.37%.
• Mthetheleli Columbus Ntsengwane in Ward 07 in the Umzimvubu Municipality – EC442. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 86.40% of the votes cast compared to 73.45% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 25.98%.
• Mziwanele Vincent Malgas in Ward 08 in the Kopanong Municipality – FS162. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 49.94% of the votes cast compared to 77.60% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 52.61%.
• Mandla Mdaka in Ward 09 in the Umhlathuze Municipality – KZN282. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 49.88% of the votes cast compared to 52.17% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 32.08%.
The one (1) new DA councillor is:
• Graham Anthony Keith Gersbach in Ward 92 in the Ekurhuleni Municipality – EKU. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 83.12% of the votes cast compared to 78.82% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 23.87%.
