Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 25 April 2018

During the by-elections contested yesterday in Gauteng, North West and the Western Cape provinces, the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained 5 seats, the African National Congress (ANC) retained one seat and the Economic Freedom Fighters gained one seat.

The new councillors for the DA are

• Lionel Mervin Greenberg in Ward 72  in the City of Johannesburg – JHB. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, increasing its margin to 91.69% of the votes cast compared to 82.67 in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 32.49%. 

• David Leonard Hensman in Ward 88 in the City of Johannesburg – JHB. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a slightly reduced margin of 79.66% of the votes cast compared to 81.97% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 25.26%. 

• Daryl Johnston in Ward 47 in the Tshwane Metro – TSH.  The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, increasing its margin to 95.18% of the votes cast compared to 87.67% in the 2016 Municipal Elections.  Voter turnout yesterday was 31.82%

• Mac-Lizia Rhuenda Solomons in Ward 10 in the Breede Valley Municipality – WC025.  The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a slightly reduced margin of 48.73% of the votes cast compared to 57.96% in the 2016 Municipal Elections.  Voter turnout yesterday was 55.77%

• Jannie Van der Westhuizen in Ward 18 in the George Municipality – WC044.  The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a slightly reduced margin of 81.98% of the votes cast compared to 93.05% in the 2016 Municipal Elections.  Voter turnout yesterday was 40.49%

The new councillors for the ANC is

• Violet Ncikazi Chauke in Ward 92 in the City of Johannesburg – JHB.  The party retained the seat it  won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, increasing its margin to 47.88% of the votes cast compared to 43.78% in the 2016 Municipal Elections.  Voter turnout yesterday was 26.01%

The new councillor for the EFF is:

• Bongani Patrick Cekiso in Ward 15 in Ditsobotla Municipality – NW384.  The party won the seat from the ANC with 36.48% of the votes cast compared to 54.79% that the ANC received in the 2016 Municipal Elections.  Voter turnout yesterday was 48.67%.
