During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo, the African National Congress (ANC) retained three (3) seats, Democratic Alliance (DA) retained one (1) seat, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained one (1) seat.
The new ANC councillors are:
• Kwandiswa Gobeni in Ward 20 in the Mnquma Municipality – EC122. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 87.95% of the votes cast compared to 69.26% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 33.49%.
• Ntombomzi Klaas in Ward 11 in the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality – EC129. The party retained the seat it won in the 9 November 2016 by-elections, with 78.89% of the votes cast compared to 68.19% in the 2016 by-election. Voter turnout yesterday was 6.22%.
• Nosakhele Sonkosi in Ward 13 in the Intsika Yethu Municipality – EC135. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 90.07% of the votes cast compared to 87.68% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 35.00%.
The new DA councillor is:
• Johanna Elizabeth Albertina Swanepoel in Ward 02 in the Thabazimbi Municipality – LIM361. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 33.59% of the votes cast compared to 57.16% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 46.89%.
The new IFP councillor is:
• Bonginkosi Mkhawuleni Zulu in Ward 04 in Mtubatuba Municipality – KZN275. The candidate retained the seat won in a 23 May 2018 by-election. The total votes cast was 48.83% compared to 37.19% in the 2018 by-election. Voter turnout yesterday was 60.21%.
