Results of the Municipal By-Elections held on 4 December 2019

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, the African National Congress (ANC) retained three (3) seats and the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained one (1) seat won in the 2016 Municipal Elections. 

The new ANC councillors are:

• Siyabulela Irvan Melani in Ward 09 in the Ndlambe Municipality – EC105. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 96.72% of the votes cast compared to 65.12% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 23.90%.
• Sthembiso Combrade Ngcobo in Ward 05 in the Umzumbe Municipality – KZN213. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 60.06% of the votes cast compared to 74.15% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 51.24%.
• Velemseni Essau Mthethwa Ward 03 in the Jozini Municipality – KZN272. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 53.06% of the votes cast compared to 48.41% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 61.53%.

The new DA councillor is:

• Lorraine Valerie Opperman in Ward 11 in the Knysna Municipality – WC048. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 41.60% of the votes cast compared to 43.56% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 46.71%.
