During the by-elections contested on Wednesday, 8 August 2018, in the Eastern Cape province, both the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) won one seat each.
The new councillor for the ANC is Philile Mayiji in Ward 29 in Mbashe Municipality – EC121. The party retained the seat it won in 2016 Municipal Elections with an increased margin of 83.90% of the votes cast as compared to 57.43% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout on Wednesday was 44.56%.
The new councillor for the DA is Matthee de Ridder Nel in Ward 3 in the Walter Sisulu Municipality – EC145. The party gained the seat previously won by the ANC during the 2016 Municipal Elections. The DA received 50.74% of the votes cast compared to 53.26% won by the ANC in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout on Wednesday was 45.16%.
