Results of the municipal By-Elections held on 6 December 2017

During yesterday’s by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Northern Cape, both the African National Congress (ANC) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained the seats they won during the 2016 Municipal Elections. 

The results and new councillors are as follows:

• Zephaniah Khonza Thwala of the IFP in Ward 18 in the Abaqulusi Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal – KZN263. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however, with the reduced with margin of 53.89% of the votes cast as compared to 55.38% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 47.82%. 

• Moditi Jacob Molala of the ANC in Ward 14 in the Lepele-Nkumpi Municipality in Limpopo – LIM355. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however, with the reduced with margin of 57.67% of the votes cast as compared to 66.16% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 47.81%.

• Grenwill Maritz of the ANC in Ward 2 in Siyathemba Municipality in the Northern Cape – NC077. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however, with a reduced margin of 45.57% of the votes cast as compared to 53.89% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 53.42%.
