Results of the municipal by-elections held in Mpumalanga on 8 and 9 January 2019

Two municipal ward by-elections were held in Mpumalanga this week. 

In the by-elections held on 8 January 2019 in Dr JS Moroka Municipality, independent candidate Marks Lucky Ntuli won the seat. The seat was previously held by the African National Congress (ANC), and was won in the ward by-elections held in June 2018. However, these June 2018 by-elections were set aside by the Electoral Court on 10 October 2018. New ward councillor Ntuli received 50.11% of the votes cast, compared to 70.17% won by the ANC in 2016. Voter turnout on Tuesday was 46.07%.

In the by-elections held in Ward 1 of Thaba Chweu – MP321 on 9 January 2019, the ANC retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Phindiwe Annah Segoane is the new ward councillor. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, with 66.24% of the votes cast, compared to 83.15% in 2016. Voter turnout yesterday was 22.90%.
