The African National Congress has won 9 and the Democratic Alliance 2 of the wards contested in yesterday’s by-elections. Both parties retained their seats. Three wards were uncontested.
The by-election in the Mhlontlo [Qumbu] Municipality – EC156 did not take place since it was withdrawn by the MEC for the Eastern Cape.
The average voter turnout was 40.06%.
Alfred Siyabulela Nxozi of the African National Congress is the new councillor in Ward 2 in the Sakhisizwe [Elliot] Municipality – EC138 in the Eastern Cape. The ward was uncontested and retained by the party.
The new councillors in KwaZulu-Natal all represent the African National Congress. They are:
• Welcome Thamsanqa Tshelembe in Ward 2 in the Richmond [Richmond] Municipality – KZN227. The ward was uncontested and retained by the party.
• Jethro Jili in Ward 6 in the Richmond [Richmond] Municipality – KZN227. The seat was retained by the party with 83.35% of the 1 921 votes cast. Voter turnout was 46.61%.
• Lungisane Derrick Mnculwane in Ward 10 in the Imbabazane [Loskop] Municipality – KZN236. The seat was retained by the party with 54.21% of the 2 361 votes cast. Voter turnout was 50.89%.
The new councillors in Limpopo and Mpumalanga both represent the African National Congress. They are:
• Tebogo Daniel Mogale in Ward 11 in the Maruleng [Hoedspruit] Municipality – LIM335, Limpopo. The seat was retained by the party with 77.43% of the 1 951 votes cast. Voter turnout was 45.19%.
• Ryder Mandla Motaung in Ward 17 in the Albert Luthuli [Elukwatini/Carolina] Municipality – MP301, Mpumalanga. The seat was retained by the party with 76.75% of the 1 090 votes cast. Voter turnout was 40.43%.
The new councillors in North West also represent the African National Congress and they are:
• Onica Mashabane in Ward 2 in the Moretele [Makapanstad] Municipality – NW371. The seat was retained by the party with 84.34% of the 1 510 votes cast. Voter turnout was 39.84%.
• Salaminah Mmapula Matlou in Ward 5 in the Moretele [Makapanstad] Municipality – NW371. The ward was uncontested and retained by the party.
Kiewiet Koopman of the African National Congress is the new councillor in Ward 1 in the KAROO HOOGLAND [Fraserburg] Municipality – NC066, Northern Cape. The seat was retained by the party with 61.92% of the 1 247 votes cast. Voter turnout was 62.01%.
The new councillors in the Western Cape both represent the Democratic Alliance and they are:
• Kevin Graham Southgate in Ward 72 in the City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality – CPT. The seat was retained by the party with 96.94% of the 4 386 votes cast. Voter turnout was 28.21%.
• Patric Daniels in Ward 7 in the Witzenberg [Ceres] Municipality – WC022. The seat was retained by the party with 47.14% of the 2 347 votes cast. Voter turnout was 48.37%.
