Results of the municipal by-elections held on 19 August 2015

The African National Congress won three wards, the Democratic Alliance two wards and the United Democratic Movement one ward in by-elections contested in four provinces yesterday.

The results saw the Democratic Alliance retained all its wards while the African National Congress lost one ward to the United Democratic Movement.

Voter turnout varied in the by-elections between 29.04% and 43.23% with an average of 34.03%. One ward was uncontested.

The new councillors for the African National Congress are:
•   Free State: Matsebetsebe Amos Mhlambi in Ward 14 in the Maluti a Phofung [Qwa-Qwa] Municipality – FS194. The seat was retained by the party with 92.82% of the 1 483 votes cast. Voter turnout was 31.03%.
•   Free State: Lefa Petrus Moletsane in Ward 8 in the Mantsopa [Ladybrand] Municipality – FS196. The seat was retained by the party with 63.64% of the 1 418 votes cast. Voter turnout was 43.23%.
•   Mpumalanga: Teboho Victor Hlakutse in Ward 3 in the Pixley Ka Seme [Volksrust] Municipality – MP304. The ward was uncontested so no voting took place. The seat was retained by the party.

The new councillors for the Democratic Alliance are:
•   Gauteng: Frederik Wilhelmus van Wyk in Ward 55 in the Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality – TSH. The seat was retained by the party with 74.78% of the 4 379 cast. Voter turnout was 29.04%.
•   Mpumalanga: Sanley van der Merwe in Ward 17 in the Mbombela [Nelspruit] Municipality – MP322. The seat was retained by the party with 91.95% of the 2 577 votes cast. Voter turnout was 34.31%.

The new councillor for the United Democratic Movement is:
•   Eastern Cape: Mandla Louis Faltein in Ward 30 in the Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA. The party won the seat with 49.93% of the 3 667 votes cast. Voter turnout was 40.34%. The seat was previously represented by the African National Congress.
