Results of the municipal by-elections held on 2 July 2014

The Electoral Commission (IEC) hereby announces the results of the municipal by-elections held in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 2 July 2014.

The Democratic Alliance won 14 of the 20 wards contested, the African National Congress five and the Inkatha Freedom Party one.

Voter turnout varied between 62.81% and 17.60% with an average of 27.04%.

One (1) by-election took place in the Eastern Cape. The new councillor is:

  • Thembakazi Msuthu of the African National Congress in Ward 16 in Ntabankulu [Ntabankulu] Municipality – EC444. The seat was retained by the party.

Eight (8) by-elections took place in Gauteng. The new councillors are:

  • Jill Ada Humphreys of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 20 in Ekurhuleni [East Rand] Municipality – EKU. The seat was retained by the party.
  • Stefanie Kruger of the Democratic Alliance Ward 24 in Ekurhuleni [East Rand] Municipality – EKU. The seat was retained by the party. 
  • Ashley Theresa Rutherford of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 92 in Ekurhuleni [East Rand] Municipality – EKU. The seat was retained by the party
  • Muntu Moses Mtyotywa of the African National Congress in Ward 11 in Randfontein [Randfontein] Municipality – GT482. The seat was retained by the party. Faeeza Chame of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 57 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB. The seat was retained by the party
  • Luvhengo Jordaan Musesi of the African National Congress in Ward 58 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB. The seat was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance.
  • Candice Christine James of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 112 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB. The seat was retained by the party.
  • Michele Spadino-Pippa of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 118 in City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB. The seat was retained by the party. 

Seven (7) by-elections took place in KwaZulu-Natal. The new councillors are:

  • Bruce Anthony Sutcliffe of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 18 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH. The seat was retained by the party.
  • Shaun Ryley of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 36 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH. The seat was retained by the party.
  • Bradley Singh of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 52 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH. The seat was previously represented by the Minority Front.
  • Devaraj Rama Pillay of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 73 in eThekwini [Durban Metro] Municipality – ETH. The seat was previously represented by the Minority Front.
  • Dudu Pretty Ncala of the African National Congress in Ward 4 in Endumeni [Dundee] Municipality – KZN241. The seat was retained by the party.
  • Themba Herbert Zungu of the Inkatha Freedom Party in Ward 6 in Hlabisa [Somkele] Municipality – KZN274. The seat was retained by the party. 
  • Malcolm William Hubner of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 22 in KwaDukuza [Stanger] Municipality – KZN292. The seat was retained by the party.

Two (2) by-elections took place in Mpumalanga. The new councillors are:

  • Piet Retief Bosch of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 30 in Govan Mbeki [Highveld Ridge] Municipality – MP307. The seat was retained by the party.  
  • Jolandi Schneider-Breetzke of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 18 in Emalahleni [Witbank] Municipality – MP312. The seat was retained by the party.

One (1) by-election each took place in the Northern Cape and the Western Cape. The new councillors are:

  • Estelle Elfreda Fritz of the African National Congress in Ward 9 in KAI !GARIB [Keimoes] Municipality – NC082. The seat was previously represented by the Congress of the People. 
  • Eleanore Rochelle Jacquelene Spies of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 5 in Knysna [Knysna] Municipality – WC048. The seat was retained by the party.
