The African National Congress has retained all six wards contested in yesterday’s by-elections in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga and Northern Cape. One ward was uncontested.
The average voter turnout was 40.54%.
The new councillors in the Eastern Cape are:
• Sindile Nimrod Toni in Ward 31 in the Buffalo City Metropolitan [East London] Municipality – BUF. The seat was retained by the party with 65.74% of the 4 358 votes cast. Voter turnout was 46.41%.
• Nomatjamani Florence Coto Ward 2 in the Ngqushwa [Peddie] Municipality – EC126. The ward was uncontested.
The new councillors in the Free State are:
• Puleng Sephora Musa in Ward 3 in the Letsemeng [Koffiefontein] Municipality – FS161. The seat was retained by the party with 54.93% of the 1 519 votes cast. Voter turnout was 43.30%.
• Tlaleng Selina Meli in Ward 16 in the Matjhabeng [Welkom] Municipality – FS184. The seat was retained by the party with 74.71% of the 2 036 votes cast. Voter turnout was 30.58%.
The new councillors in Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape are:
• Thabang Nathaniel Morufane in Ward 28 in the Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] Municipality – MP313, Mpumalanga. The seat was retained by the party with 88.34% of the 1 568 votes cast. Voter turnout was 26.63%.
• Keitumetse Prudence Bosman in Ward 3 in the Tsantsabane [Postmasburg] Municipality – NC085, Northern Cape. The seat was retained by the party with 54.10% of the 2 159 votes cast. Voter turnout was 54.10%.
