The African National Congress has won 3 and the Democratic Alliance 2 of the 5 wards contested in yesterday’s by-elections. Both parties retained their seats. None of the three independent candidates, who participated in the by-elections, won seats.
Voter turnout varied between 46.35% and 33.38% with an average of 37.67%.
The new councillors for the African National Congress are:
• Free State: Mpho Samuel Chakane in Ward 10 in the Moqhaka [Kroonstad] Municipality – FS201. The seat was retained by the party with 87.50% of the 1 013 votes cast. Voter turnout was 35.35%.
• Mpumalanga: Maria Nomgqibelo Mathibela in Ward 29 in the Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] Municipality – MP313. The seat was retained by the party with 64.43% of the 1 504 votes cast. Voter turnout was 46.35%.
• Northern Cape: Augus Kadea Zalisa in Ward 4 in the Magareng [Warrenton] Municipality – NC093. The seat was retained by the party with 71.02% of the 1 341 votes cast. Voter turnout was 41.58%.
The new councillors for the Democratic Alliance are:
• Gauteng: Phillipus Nothnagel in Ward 5 in the Emfuleni [Vereeniging] Municipality – GT421. The seat was retained by the party with 98.05% of the 3 716 votes cast. Voter turnout was 33.38%.
• Western Cape: Cornelius Marthinus Lamprecht in Ward 5 in the Theewaterskloof [Caledon] Municipality – WC031. The seat was retained by the party with 74.28% of the 1 675 votes cast. Voter turnout was 41.03%.
