Results of the municipal by-elections held on 30 May 2018

Centurion - During the by-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape provinces, both the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained the seats won during the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The new councillors for the DA are:

  • Terence Peter Collins in Ward 10 in Ethekwini Municipality – ETH. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections with an increased margin of 94.23% of the votes cast compared to 91.13% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 40.08%. 

  • Charleen Claudette van Nooi in Ward 3 in Saldanha Bay Municipality – WC014. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 52.82% of the votes cast compared to 69.99% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 40.21%. 

  • Marcellis Bouvier Gregory Theyse in Ward 13 in Oudtshoorn Municipality – WC045. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 50.59% of the votes cast compared to 60.19% in the 2016 Municipal Elections.  Voter turnout yesterday was 52.85%.

The new councillor for the IFP is Nkosinathi Skhumbuzo Khumalo in Ward 7 in Nkandla Municipality – KZN286. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections with an increased margin of 53.33% of the votes cast compared to 51.26% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 65.07%.
