The Democratic Alliance won two of the three municipal ward by-elections which took place on Wednesday, 30 January 2013. The remaining seat went to the African National Congress.
Voter turnout varied between 61.79% and 30.41% with an average of 39.53%.
One (1) by-election took place in KwaZulu-Natal. John Neville Lewis of the Democratic Alliance is the new councillor in Ward 5, uMngeni [Howick] Municipality – KZN222. The seat was retained by the party.
Two (2) by-elections took place in the Western Cape. The new councillors are:
• Johanna Martlow of the Democratic Alliance in Ward 22, City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality – CPT. The seat was retained by the party; and
• Piet Waterboer of the African National Congress in Ward 10 in Witzenberg [Ceres] Municipality – WC022. This seat was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance.
