Wards to be contested in the municipal by-elections of 30 January 2013

Municipal ward by-elections will take place in two provinces, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 30 January 2013. These will be the first by-elections in the new year.

A total of three (3) wards will be contested. Voting will take place in 18 voting districts in the following wards:

KwaZulu-Natal:
• Ward 5 in uMngeni [Howick] Municipality – KZN222 with 4 336 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

Western Cape:
• Ward 22 in City of Cape Town [Cape Town] Municipality – CPT with 14 415 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership by the party.
• Ward 10 in Witzenberg [Ceres] Municipality – WC022 with 3 374 registered voters. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership by the party.

ELECTION TIMETABLE FOR ALL MUNICIPAL BY-ELECTIONS CALLED ON OR BEFORE 7 DECEMBER 2012 TO BE HELD ON 30 JANUARY 2013

The cut-off dates for the various electoral processes for these by-elections are as follows:
7 December: Notice calling the by-election on or before
11 December: Certification of the voters’ roll and making certified segments available for inspection
11 December: Notices: List of and particulars pertaining to voting stations and mobile voting stations
12 December: Opening of applications for special votes
8 January at 17h00: Cut-off date and time for submission of nomination of candidates
9 January: Cut-off date to notify party/independent nominator of non-compliance of outstanding candidate documents
14 January at 17h00: Cut-off date and time for party/independent nominator to submit outstanding ward candidate documents
14 January: Closing of applications for special votes
15 January: Compilation and certification of lists of candidates contesting a ward
15 January: Issue certificates to candidates
29 January: Special votes at voting stations and special vote home visits – 08h00 to 17h00
30 January: By-election date
