  Floor-Crossing Period for Municipal Councillors
17 Sep 2004
  A total of 486 municipal councillors crossed the floor successfully during the window period from 1 to 15 September 2004. Ten (10) councillors gave notice to the IEC, but were not successful in crossing the floor, the Acting Chief Electoral Officer, Mr Norman du Plessis, announced in Pretoria today (17 September).

Of the 284 municipalities, which includes district councils, the composition of 164 were affected by floor crossing.

The details of the overall movement of councillors and per province indicating previous as well as the current number of councillors for each party in the 164 affected municipalities are available under the Quick Menu on the Home Page (Floor Crossing 2004: Municipal Councils.

Ten applications did not comply with the requirements for floor-crossing. Of these, eight did not meeting the 10 percent requirement; for one no confirmation of acceptance was received whilst another applied to cross outside of the window period for floor-crossing.

These councillors will lose their seats. The PR vacancies will be filled by the party while for the ward vacancies by-elections will be held.
