Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 13 November 2019

Three (3) municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Western Cape on Wednesday, 13 November 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by twenty-three (23) candidates from eight (8) political parties, and three (3) independent candidates.  

All the voting stations for the by-elections will be open from 7 am to 7 pm.

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

• Ward 19 in the City of Cape Town Municipality – CPT will be contested by seven (7) candidates, namely; Martin Charl Burke from the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Fallon Valencia April from the African National Congress (ANC), Ebrahim Sawant from the Democratic Alliance (DA), Kenneth David Brookes from the Democratic Independent Party (DIP), Luvuyo Ntakana from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Zandré Carl Allen from the Good Party, and Jack Petersen from Organic Humanity Movement (OHM).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 62.87% and the DA candidate won the ward with 66.44% of valid votes.

• Ward 82 in the City of Cape Town Municipality – CPT will be contested by ten (10) candidates, namely; Chester Arendse, Jaques Brinkhuys and Mogamat Sedick Gabier as independent candidates, Grant Jeremy Classen from the ACDP, Marie Jeanette Olifant from the ANC, Phila Van Der Heever from Cape/Kaapse Party, Washiela Harris from the DA, Sandra Shirley Poleman from the DIP, Daniel Peter Petersen from the EFF, and Paul Anthony Daniels from the Good Party. 

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 59.94% and the DA candidate won the ward with 83.64% of valid votes. 

• Ward 04 in Matzikama Municipality – WC011 will be contested by six (6) candidates, namely; Denville Shaun Karools from the ACDP, Cecil Andrew Le Fleur from the ANC, Andrew George Martin Julies from the DA, Demetrius Donovan Roman from the EFF, Willem Daniël Loff from the Good Party, and Reginald William Titus Daniels from the Khoi-San Heavenly Party.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councilor’s resignation.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 55.48% and the DA candidate won the ward with 49.86% of valid votes.
