Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 24 July 2019

Five municipal ward by-elections will take place in Gauteng and the Western Cape on Wednesday, 24 July 2019.

The by-elections will be contested by sixteen (16) candidates from four (4) political parties.  

The details of the by-elections are as follows:

In Gauteng:

• Ward 54 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB will be contested by Ravi John Frank Govender from the African National Congress (ANC), Stuart Iain Marais from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Simphiwe Maroza Hogana from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 65.82% and the DA candidate won the ward with 65.11% of valid votes.

• Ward 83 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB will be contested by Corey Sarana Spengler-Gathercole from the ANC, Florence Cheryl Roberts from the DA, Stanley Hatlani Masinga from the EFF and Cornelis Boer from the Vryheidsfront Plus (FF+).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 77.44% and the DA candidate won the ward with 88.20% of valid votes.

• Ward 109 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB will be contested by Liaquad Alley Mohamed Ebrahim from the ANC, Sabatin Mhlaba Shongwe from the DA and Molatelo Patricia Mofokeng from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.82% and the DA candidate won the ward with 50.45% of valid votes.

• Ward 112 in the City of Johannesburg Municipality – JHB will be contested by Vukile Hamilton Hlongwa from the ANC, Lerato Magdeline Philiya Mphefo from the DA and Alfred Thabiso Telekoa from the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 67.36% and the DA candidate won the ward with 45.53% of valid votes.

In the Western Cape:

• Ward 02 in the Swellendam Municipality – WC034 will be contested by William Morris Riddles from the ANC, Abraham Michael Pokwas from the DA and Stefanus Nel from the EFF. 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s explusion from the MEC.  The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 73.03% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 47.81% of valid votes.
