Candidates contesting Municipal By-Elections on 4 December 2019

Four municipal ward by-elections will take place today in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape provinces.

The by-elections will be contested by one (1) independent and 15 candidates from eight (8) political parties.  

In the Eastern Cape:

• Ward 09 in Ndlambe Municipality – EC105 will be contested by two (2) candidates namely; Siyabulela Irvan Melani of the African National Congress (ANC); and Nandipha Moira Veto of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 64.62% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 65.12% of valid votes.

In KwaZulu-Natal:

• Ward 05 in uMzumbe Municipality – KZN213 will be contested by five (5) candidates namely Sthembiso Comrade Ngcobo of the of the ANC; Phumzile Rosemary Mvuna of the African Transformation Movement (ATM); Mthobisi Proffesor Qwabe of the EFF; Simphiwe Shibe of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP); and Cynthia Bathabile Gumede of the National Freedom Party (NFP). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 51.04% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 74.15% of valid votes.

• Ward 03 in Jozini Municipality – KZN272 will be contested by three (3) candidates namely; Velemseni Essau Mthethwa of the ANC; Sipho Bhekithemba Gumede of the EFF; and Nomuntu Mandlenkosi Malambule of the IFP.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 71.57% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 48.41% of valid votes.

In the Western Cape: 

• Ward 11 in Knysna Municipality – WC048 will be contested by six (6) candidates, namely; Allan Lesley Kock, an independent, Russel Warren Arends of the ANC; Lorraine Valerie Opperman from the Democratic Alliance (DA); Niel Glen Louw of the EFF; Neville Patrick Korkee of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa; and Johannes Wagenaar of the Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners.  

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor's resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 63.23% and the DA candidate won the ward with 43.56% of valid votes.
